Specialty Finishes

Two ancient crafts. One modern home.

Walk into a room finished with real Venetian plaster or microcement and you can feel the difference before you understand why. The surface has depth, dimension, and movement that flat paint or tile simply cannot produce. Light catches the trowel work and shifts as you move through the room. The color isn’t one color — it’s a soft blend of layered tones that read as marble, concrete, silk, or weathered stone depending on the technique.

This isn’t a finish you achieve with one coat. Authentic Venetian plaster and microcement are hand-applied in multiple thin layers using a steel trowel, with each layer cured, sanded, and burnished before the next. The result is a surface that looks hewn from natural material, not painted onto drywall.

At Flow Renovations, we install specialty plaster and microcement finishes across Cleveland-area homes for homeowners who want walls, floors, and surfaces that feel intentional, crafted, and one-of-a-kind. Whether you’re renovating a Shaker Heights heritage home, creating a microcement bathroom in a modern Westlake build, or finishing a Tremont loft with marble effect feature walls, we deliver the depth and craftsmanship that defines real specialty finish work — and we back every installation with a lifetime labor warranty.

The Flow Renovations Promise

Lifetime labor warranty. Unlimited inspections until perfection.

Most specialty plaster contractors give you a 1-year warranty and disappear. We don’t. Every Venetian plaster, microcement, or specialty finish we install in your home is backed by an unlimited-inspection labor warranty for as long as you own the property — up to a full lifetime.

If you ever notice a flaw, a cure issue, a sealer concern, or a finish detail that doesn’t meet the standard we set on installation day, we come back. As many times as it takes. Until you’re satisfied. No deductible. No surprise fees. No fine print.

It’s the warranty no one else in Cleveland will write — and the reason our finishes look the same on day 3,650 as they did on day one.

What’s covered

  • Unlimited inspections for the lifetime of your ownership of the property — no cap.
  • Free touch-ups on any installation flaw, cure issue, or finish defect — no deductible, no service fee.
  • Sealer re-application at no charge if our sealer ever fails on a wet-area microcement or Tadelakt install.
  • Satisfaction guaranteed. If the work doesn’t meet the standard we agreed to, we make it right at our expense.
  • Documentation provided for every project: materials used, color formulas, application notes — for future reference.
Finishes We Apply

Five specialty finishes. Five distinct aesthetics.

Venetian plaster and microcement aren’t one finish — they’re a family of related hand-application techniques, each producing a distinctly different visual result. Here’s an honest breakdown of every finish we offer across Cleveland.

02 Classic Venetian plaster Marmorino finish with polished marble look

Classic Venetian (Marmorino)

Polished · marble-like · luxurious

The original Italian technique — lime-based plaster mixed with marble dust, applied in multiple translucent layers, then polished to a soft sheen. Reads almost like real marble when finished. The most prestigious of all wall finishes. Often used in formal entries, dining rooms, and master suites.

Best forFormal interiors, premium renovations, statement entries and dining rooms
03 Modern Microcement bathroom and kitchen finish with seamless modern look

Microcement

Seamless · durable · waterproof when sealed

The modern, industrial cousin of Venetian plaster. Microcement is a cement-based polymer coating applied in thin layers over almost any surface — walls, floors, countertops, showers, even existing tile. Far more durable than Venetian plaster, fully waterproof when sealed, and ideal for bathrooms, kitchens, and high-traffic floors.

Best forBathrooms, kitchens, floors, countertops, showers, tile resurfacing, modern interiors
04 Tadelakt textured Venetian plaster in warm earth tone bathroom

Tadelakt & Textured Venetian

Earthy · matte · Mediterranean

Originally a Moroccan waterproofing technique, Tadelakt and similar textured Venetian finishes are matte, soft, and earthier than classic polished plaster. Subtle waves and movement from trowel work. Pairs beautifully with warm tones: terracotta, ochre, clay, sage. Particularly suited to spa-like bathrooms and Mediterranean-inspired interiors.

Best forBathrooms, kitchens, Mediterranean interiors, earthy color schemes
05 Limewash mineral plaster finish with soft cloudy variation in a heritage home

Limewash & Mineral Plaster

Soft · cloudy · heritage feel

The softer cousin of true Venetian plaster: limewash and mineral plasters produce gentle, cloud-like color variation across a wall, almost watercolor in feel. More matte than other finishes. Currently the fastest-growing plaster style nationally and exceptionally well-suited to Cleveland’s century homes in Lakewood, Cleveland Heights, and Shaker Heights.

Best forCentury homes, heritage interiors, bedrooms, soft neutral palettes

The Craft

Why specialty finishes are not just paint with texture.

Most homeowners considering Venetian plaster or microcement don’t realize how different the process is from regular painting. Understanding what goes into the work explains why the result looks different — and why pricing reflects skilled trade work, not painter rates.

A Venetian plaster or microcement surface is built up in three to six thin layers over several days, each applied by hand with a steel trowel, allowed to cure, sanded, and then burnished or polished before the next layer goes on. The materials are not the same products you find at a paint store — they’re specialty lime, marble dust, cement, polymers, and mineral-based mixtures sourced from European manufacturers and specialty suppliers.

What separates good plaster and microcement work from bad isn’t the material — it’s the trowel technique. The pressure, angle, direction, and rhythm of the trowel determine whether the finished surface looks like layered depth or like a botched paint job. This is why authentic specialty finishes are more expensive than paint and why not every painter can install them. The trade takes years to master.

We’re upfront with every client about the process and the investment. Venetian plaster and microcement are not the right choice for every wall or every project. When they’re right, they’re extraordinary. When they’re applied to the wrong surface or in the wrong room, they’re an expensive mistake. We’ll tell you honestly which situation applies before quoting — and back the work with our lifetime labor warranty when we do install.

What goes into the work

  • 1
Substrate preparation Surface is skim-coated, sanded smooth, and primed with the correct specialty base for plaster or microcement.
  • 2
First base coat Base layer applied with steel trowel, cured fully before next coat. Reinforcing mesh embedded for microcement floors.
  • 3
Middle & finish coats Two to four additional layers, each thinner than the last, building depth, veining, or seamless texture.
  • 4
Burnishing & polishing Final layer burnished with the trowel or hand-polished to develop the signature sheen or matte finish.
  • 5
Sealing & protection Wax, polyurethane, or specialty sealer applied for moisture resistance in wet areas and high-traffic floors.
Cleveland Specifics

Why Venetian plaster and microcement work especially well in Cleveland homes.

Cleveland’s mix of century homes, modern builds, and rich architectural history makes it one of the strongest markets in the Midwest for specialty plaster and microcement work. Here’s what makes local installation different.

Century homes are built for plaster.

Most Cleveland homes built before 1955 already have real plaster walls under the modern paint — in Tremont, Ohio City, Cleveland Heights, Shaker Heights, and Lakewood especially. These walls were originally finished with hand-troweled lime plaster. Modern Venetian and limewash finishes are essentially returning these walls to their original aesthetic tradition. The substrate is ideal.

Microcement transforms modern bathrooms.

Cleveland’s post-1990 builds in Westlake, Avon, Avon Lake, and Strongsville typically have tiled bathrooms that homeowners want to update without a full gut renovation. Microcement is the answer: it bonds directly over existing tile and grout, eliminates grout lines, and produces a seamless, spa-like result. The same goes for outdated kitchen backsplashes and basement floors.

Climate matters during application.

Cleveland’s humid summers and dry winters affect plaster cure times. Ideal application conditions are 50-75°F with moderate humidity — which means spring and fall are the best Venetian plaster seasons in Northeast Ohio. Microcement is more forgiving with climate but still requires monitored cure times. We can apply year-round and adjust schedules for consistent results.

Resale impact is real (in the right neighborhoods).

Venetian plaster, microcement, and marble effect finishes in premium Cleveland-area markets — Shaker Heights, Pepper Pike, Hunting Valley, Bay Village, Rocky River, Westlake — are recognized by buyers as craftsmanship signals and support premium pricing. In more price-sensitive markets, the same finish may not return the investment at sale. We’ll discuss your specific neighborhood and goals during the consultation.

Answers

Cleveland homeowners ask us.

The questions we hear most often about Venetian plaster, microcement, and specialty finish projects.

  • Venetian plaster is a lime-based finish for walls and ceilings — rich, marble-like, polished, traditional. Microcement is a cement-and-polymer coating for walls, floors, countertops, and showers — seamless, modern, durable, and waterproof when sealed. Venetian plaster excels in living areas; microcement excels in bathrooms, kitchens, and floors. Many of our Cleveland projects use both in the same home for different rooms.
  • Marble effect painting is our signature hand-applied finish that uses Venetian plaster as the base, then builds custom veining and movement using specialty pigments and trowel work. The finished wall reads as genuine Calacatta, Carrara, or Statuario marble — at a fraction of the cost and weight of real stone. Every installation is one-of-a-kind. Especially popular for feature walls, fireplace surrounds, and powder rooms in premium Cleveland-area homes.
  • Our lifetime labor warranty covers unlimited inspections and touch-ups for any installation flaw, cure issue, or finish defect for as long as you own the property. No deductible, no service fee, no fine print. If you ever notice something off in our work, we come back and make it right. Sealer re-application is included on wet-area microcement and Tadelakt installs. The warranty does not cover damage from third-party trades, water intrusion from non-related sources, or normal wear in floor installations beyond reasonable expectation.
  • Specialty finishes take longer than painting because each layer must cure before the next is applied. A single accent wall typically takes 4-7 working days. A full room runs 7-14 days. Microcement bathrooms and floors typically run 10-14 days including sealer cure. Limewash finishes are slightly faster at 5-10 days for a room. The cure time between layers is what determines the schedule, not the application speed.
  • Yes — microcement is one of the few specialty finishes that bonds directly over existing tile, grout, concrete, and most hard surfaces. We prep the tile, apply a bonding primer and reinforcing mesh, then build up the microcement layers to a seamless finish. This is the most cost-effective way to update a dated tile bathroom or kitchen backsplash without a full gut renovation. We frequently do this for Cleveland-area homeowners with 1990s-2000s ceramic tile.
  • Yes, with proper preparation. We skim coat the painted surface to remove texture, sand it smooth, and apply a plaster-specific primer. This prep adds 1-2 days to the project but produces a result indistinguishable from plaster-on-plaster work. Surfaces that cannot be properly prepped (severely damaged drywall, wallpaper, glossy painted surfaces) may need to be replaced before plaster application.
  • No. Faux finish painting uses regular paint with techniques (sponging, ragging, dragging) to create surface texture or visual interest. Venetian plaster is a hand-applied lime-based plaster building actual depth and dimension through multiple cured layers. The materials, tools, application method, and final result are entirely different. Faux finishes are paint techniques; plaster is plaster. Marble effect painting is also a real plaster technique — not faux.
  • Properly installed Venetian plaster on a properly prepped substrate is exceptionally durable — original Italian plaster walls have lasted centuries. Microcement is even more impact-resistant due to its cement-and-polymer composition and is engineered specifically to resist cracking. In a normal Cleveland home, expect 20+ years of life with minimal maintenance from either finish. Failures typically result from substrate issues. With our skim-coat prep, mesh embedding (for microcement floors), proper cure times, and lifetime labor warranty, this rarely happens — and we cover it if it does.
  • Absolutely — microcement is one of the best bathroom and shower surface options available. When properly applied with mesh reinforcement and sealed with a high-performance polyurethane or epoxy sealer, microcement is fully waterproof, seamless (no grout lines to clean), and far more visually striking than tile. It’s our most-requested finish for primary bathroom renovations in Westlake, Bay Village, and Shaker Heights.
  • Specialty finishes cost significantly more than premium paint due to specialty materials, multi-layer application, skilled trade labor, and our lifetime warranty. Classic Marmorino and marble effect painting are the highest tier; microcement varies based on whether it’s walls or floors and whether it goes over existing tile; limewash is more affordable. Cost varies by room size, substrate condition, finish complexity, and color shifts. Rather than quote inaccurate ranges, we provide free on-site consultations with itemized quotes within 48 hours.
  • Yes. Sample boards in different finishes, colors, and techniques — including marble effect, classic Venetian, microcement, Tadelakt, and limewash — are part of every consultation. For full-room projects, we also apply sample patches on your actual walls during the project so you can confirm the finish in your home’s specific lighting before committing to the full installation. Adjustments to color or technique are made before the rest of the work proceeds.
