Why Fireplaces Matter

A renovated fireplace resets the entire room.

Your fireplace is the natural focal point of your living room. When it’s dated, beat up, or builder-grade, the entire room reads as dated — no matter how nice the furniture, the flooring, or the lighting. A renovated fireplace doesn’t just refresh one wall. It resets the entire space.

Modern fireplace renovation has moved far beyond “paint the brick white.” Today’s designs use stone veneer, large-format tile, custom millwork, integrated shelving, and floor-to-ceiling stone or panel treatments to create architectural features that look intentional and built-in. Done right, you walk into a room and the fireplace tells you everything you need to know about the home’s quality.

At Flow Renovations, we specialize in fireplace surrounds, hearth work, mantel installation, and full fireplace face renovations across Cleveland-area homes. Whether you’re modernizing a dated 1970s brick fireplace in Parma or building a custom stone floor-to-ceiling feature in a new Westlake build, we handle the design, demolition, and finish work that transforms what you have into what you want.

Styles We Build

Six fireplace styles. One for every room.

Different architecture, different rooms, different budgets. Here’s an honest breakdown of every fireplace surround style we install and renovate — with notes on when each one is the right call.

01 Modern linear gas fireplace with contemporary surround

Modern Linear Gas

Horizontal, contemporary, dramatic

The fastest-growing fireplace style of the past five years: horizontal ribbon-flame gas fireplaces with clean modern surrounds. We design and install the surround, hearth, and finish materials around the firebox — working with your gas appliance installer for the firebox itself.

Best forModern interiors, open-concept living rooms, new builds, full renovations
02 Stone fireplace surround in a transitional living room

Stone Surround

Premium, textured, timeless

Natural stone veneer, stacked stone, or split-face stone surrounding the firebox — usually paired with a wood mantel or floating shelf. Cleveland’s most-requested fireplace style. Adapts well to traditional, transitional, and rustic-modern interiors.

Best forLiving rooms, family rooms, transitional interiors, suburban Cleveland homes
03 Traditional brick fireplace with wood mantel

Traditional Brick & Mantel

Classic Cleveland charm

Refresh of original brick or new brick installations with a substantial wood mantel above. Common in Cleveland century homes (Lakewood, Cleveland Heights, Shaker) where preserving architectural character matters. We also restore historic brick that has been painted over.

Best forCentury homes, traditional interiors, brick restoration, classic mantels
04 Floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace feature wall

Floor-to-Ceiling Feature

Hero-build architectural moment

Dramatic full-height fireplace surround running from hearth to ceiling — usually stone, tile, or panel material. The fireplace becomes the architectural centerpiece of the entire room. Best with vaulted or cathedral ceilings, but works in 9-foot rooms too.

Best forVaulted ceilings, premium builds, statement renovations, great rooms
05 Electric or built-in fireplace in a custom millwork wall

Electric & Built-In

No gas, no chimney, no problem

Modern electric fireplaces integrated into custom millwork — often paired with built-in shelving and a TV above. No gas lines, no venting, no permits in most municipalities. The most flexible and lowest-disruption fireplace option for renovations.

Best forCondos, bedrooms, basements, no-vent installations, rental properties
06 Tile fireplace surround with modern pattern

Tile Surround

Pattern, color, design moment

Decorative tile surround — subway, herringbone, large-format slab, mosaic, or zellige. Tile lets you introduce pattern and color in a way stone can’t. Particularly strong in transitional and eclectic interiors. Often paired with a slim shelf instead of a traditional mantel.

Best forTransitional interiors, design-forward homeowners, color statements, smaller rooms
Honest Scope

What we do and what we don’t.

Fireplace renovation involves multiple trades. We’re upfront about what Flow Renovations handles in-house versus what we coordinate with licensed specialists. No surprises mid-project.

What Flow handles in-house

  • Demolition of existing fireplace facing, surround, and mantel
  • Framing, blocking, and structural prep for new surround material
  • Stone veneer, tile, brick, and panel installation
  • Custom mantel design and installation (wood, stone, custom)
  • Built-in shelving and millwork integration around the fireplace
  • Hearth installation and finish work
  • Final paint, caulk, and trim work for a seamless built-in look

What we coordinate with specialists

  • Gas line installation, modification, or relocation (licensed plumber)
  • Gas fireplace insert appliance installation (factory-certified installer)
  • Chimney inspection and lining (certified chimney specialist)
  • Wood-burning to gas conversion (licensed HVAC/gas specialist)
  • Permitting for gas work or structural modifications (we coordinate)

We work with trusted Cleveland-area licensed specialists for any gas, venting, or chimney work. You get one point of contact (us), one project schedule, and licensed pros handling code-regulated work.

Cleveland Specifics

Why fireplaces in Cleveland homes require thoughtful design.

Cleveland’s mix of century homes, mid-century ranches, and modern builds means fireplace renovations land very differently depending on what you’re starting with. Here’s what we consider.

Century home fireplaces deserve preservation.

Many homes in Tremont, Ohio City, Cleveland Heights, Shaker Heights, and Lakewood have original fireplaces with historic tile, decorative mantels, or hand-laid brick that are irreplaceable. Before we recommend renovation, we assess what’s original and worth preserving. Sometimes the right answer is a careful restoration, not a modern replacement. We’ll tell you the difference.

Mid-century brick can be repurposed.

Thousands of Cleveland-area homes from the 1950s-1970s have dated red brick or stone fireplaces that owners assume must be torn out. Often they don’t. Painted properly with the right primer system, refaced with stone veneer over existing brick, or modernized with a new mantel and hearth treatment, the existing structure becomes the foundation for a much-improved result — saving demolition cost and structural complications.

Wood-burning fireplaces are losing favor.

Cleveland-area homeowners are increasingly converting wood-burning fireplaces to gas inserts for convenience, cleaner operation, and better heat output. We work with licensed gas specialists who handle the conversion itself, then build the new surround around the modern insert. Important: conversion permits are required in most Cuyahoga County municipalities. We coordinate this with you.

Floor-to-ceiling work has weight concerns.

Cleveland homes built before 1980 often have wood-frame walls that weren’t engineered for full-height stone installations. Real stone veneer adds significant weight that may require structural reinforcement or a switch to manufactured stone (lighter, still real-looking). We assess wall framing and substrate during the estimate and recommend the right material for your specific home.

Answers

Cleveland homeowners ask us.

The questions we hear most often about fireplace renovation projects.

  • Most fireplace surround renovations take 5-10 working days depending on complexity. Simple tile or paint refreshes finish in 3-5 days. Full demo with stone veneer and custom mantel runs 7-10 days. Floor-to-ceiling builds with structural reinforcement can take 10-14 days. Gas conversions or chimney work add specialist scheduling time.
  • We handle the surround, hearth, mantel, and finish work around new or existing gas fireplaces. For the gas firebox installation itself and any gas line work, we coordinate with licensed Cleveland-area gas specialists. You get one project, one schedule, one point of contact — with the right specialists handling code-regulated work. We never do gas line work without a licensed pro.
  • Often yes. Dated brick fireplaces can be refaced with stone veneer, painted with the right primer system, or topped with a new mantel and hearth — transforming the look without full demolition. We assess your existing structure during the estimate and recommend the most cost-effective path to the look you want. Sometimes preservation costs less than replacement.
  • Painting brick is permanent — once painted, you can’t easily reverse it. That said, painted brick fireplaces look stunning in many Cleveland interiors, particularly white-painted brick in traditional and farmhouse styles. We use specialized masonry primer and heat-rated paint for areas near the firebox opening. We’ll discuss commitment level and alternatives during the estimate.
  • Real stone (full-thickness natural stone) is heavier, more expensive, and requires structural reinforcement on most walls. Manufactured stone veneer (thin-cut concrete cast from real stone molds) looks nearly identical, weighs roughly 1/3 as much, costs significantly less, and installs on standard wall framing without reinforcement. For most Cleveland fireplace projects, manufactured stone is the practical choice.
  • Surround-only renovations (changing the facing, mantel, hearth) typically don’t require permits in most Cleveland-area municipalities. Gas line modifications, chimney work, fireplace insert installations, and any structural framing changes do require permits. We coordinate permit pulling for any scope that requires it and never proceed without proper authorization.
  • Cost varies significantly by scope. Simple mantel and paint refreshes are the most affordable. Tile and stone veneer surrounds run mid-range. Floor-to-ceiling stone with custom millwork is the premium tier. Gas conversions and specialist coordination add to cost. Rather than quote inaccurate ranges, we provide free on-site estimates with itemized quotes within 48 hours.
  • Electric fireplaces can be installed almost anywhere — no gas line, no chimney, no venting required. We build the surround, hearth, and built-in millwork to make them look fully integrated. New gas fireplace installations in homes without existing gas service are more complex and require coordinated work with gas specialists. We discuss feasibility during the estimate.
  • A renovated fireplace is one of the highest-impact visual upgrades in a home. Buyers walk into a living room and immediately read the fireplace as a quality signal for the entire space. Neutral, well-built surrounds (stone, tile, classic mantels) typically help resale. Highly personalized choices (bold-color tile, unusual materials) may help or hurt depending on the buyer pool.
